This man is performing a Daoist ceremony.  It is said that due to the power of this man's faith, he is enduring the pain of the spike ball, he is carrying, as well as the welts on his back that were self-inflicted via a barbed sword just seconds prior to this photo.  The man is repeatedly chanting in what I was told are tongues, and enduring additional pain via another man that continues to spit alcohol on the man's wounded back.
